Service learning projects and common core for middle school teachers to motivate students in ELA intervention class

Middle school English intervention students struggle with motivation and engagement in their intervention class, due to failure in their past elementary academic years. Therefore, it is imperative that middle school teachers implement innovative and motivating curriculum in which changes their student’s views on their education and allows personal growth to occur within each student.
 Service learning projects provides students with an experience in which they can apply their academic knowledge and skills to a real life situation. This real life application allows abstract concepts to come alive for students, which increases understanding of the concepts and skills being taught. Students develop empathy, convert into engaged citizens, and become intrinsically motivated by being a part of a service learning project in which they hold value to. Service learning projects allows intervention students to work towards goals that are attainable and builds confidence within themselves.
