Bridging academic support in a dual language kindergarten program
Parent participation in a child’s early years of school is very crucial. This thesis project contains research on the topic of parent involvement and early literacy. The research on parent involvement states that parents who encourage and support their children before they begin school and during school, send a strong message to their children that school is important. Parents who support their children and communicate with their teacher set them up for success. The early literacy research states that parents can help their children build a love for literacy before they begin school and children who build a love for literacy become better readers. As a result, this handbook includes four educational sessions that include early literacy, mathematics, writing and oral development activities that parents can do to support their child at home. By using this handbook parents can learn how to help their child at home in ways that mirror what students are learning in Kindergarten to help them be successful in Kindergarten and prepare them for future grades.
