A study on the effectiveness of AVID in increasing student success in college preparatory mathematics courses

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) in assisting students in college preparatory mathematics courses. Included are an indepth look at the core values of AVID and the implementation of these principles in a high school setting, particularly in mathematics. Eighteen eleventh grade AVID students enrolled in their second or third year of AVID at a high school in southern California were surveyed. Students were asked to rate sixteen AVID learning strategies. Their responses are presented in this paper. Based on research of factors that contribute toward student success in school, many of which are exemplified by AVID, and students' acceptance to 2-year and 4-year colleges as well as the perceptions of the students in this study indicate AVID has been instrumental in the success of students in college preparatory math courses.
