Cholera in the Time of Gold: American Medicine and the California Fevers, 1830-1850

This thesis is an examination of early American medical science and the response of its practitioners to outbreaks of epidemic diseases, such as yellow fever, cholera and malaria. In addition to the Plague of Athens and the Philadelphia yellow fever epidemic of 1793, it describes the cholera epidemic that occurred in Sacramento, California in 1850.
