We Are Authors: Supporting Student Writing

The focus of this study was to research the elements of effective instruction that impact young writers’ attitudes toward writing. Writer’s workshop was implemented in one second grade class. Qualitative data was collected from surveys with parents and students, as well as teacher anecdotal notes. The most common responses were charted onto figures. They indicated a change in attitude toward enjoying writing. While student attitudes were affected by a variety of factors, the elements students appreciated most were an increase in the amount of time spent writing, and choice on the genre and topic of writing assignments. These elements were found to not only improve student attitudes toward writing, but also their confidence with writing tasks. While one particular method of teaching is not the best for all situations, teachers can implement core foundational principals that are essential to positive student mindsets.
