Cognitive mapping and pedagogical style : a study of a correlation with academic achievement

The study of Cognitive Mapping and its application to the field of Education is examined with respect to the matching of students to instructors. The origins of field-dependence are examined and the implications toward the educational system are discussed with emphasis placed on theory of learning in the college environment. The history of learning and the work that has been accomplished is reviewed and applied to original research on the theory of Personalized Instruction. This theory promotes the matching of student and teacher with regard to the optimum learning environment; the main benefit of this match or prescription is to temporarily lessen the shock of the college learning environment. Various testing instruments that have been developed for the theory of Cognitive Mapping and Personalized Instruction are discussed, and the results of the research are given.
