Despite the general affluence and cultural advancement of the American people, malnutrition remains a serious problem. Its negative consequences are far-reaching. Some of the more important of these are poor physical health and poor mental health which, in turn, lead to lower on-the-job productivity and lover social aptitudes. While this burden falls most heavily upon the poor, the problem permeates the total society (i). Higher welfare costs due to malnutrition, for example, axe borne by the nation as a whole.
