Benefits of Preoperative Care, a Modernized Video for Hospitalized Children
Children who are hospitalized face disruption of daily life. With this there can be many emotional disturbances. Surgical procedures can cause fears and stress, especially for children. Research indicates children who have negative experiences in hospitals are more likely to have negative outcomes, such as increased pain, anxiety, regression, and aggression. Child Life Specialists are pediatric health care professionals who work with children and families to help them cope with the challenges of hospitalization, illness, and disability. By providing services they are able to make hospitalization easier on children by assisting them with their psychological needs, such as preparing children for surgery. It was important to recognize children's experiences by providing effective tools such as a preoperative video in order to create positive and less stressful experience for hospitalized children. The purpose of this project was to create a modernized video for pediatric surgical departments. The video: John Muir's, What to Expect on Your Surgery Day, was aimed for hospitalized children to get a better understanding of the surgery process by taking a journey through a pediatric hospital. Results demonstrated the video project is an effective tool for children going through the surgery process.
